We ended the experiment by cutting the rest of the still-big yew back on June 1. That late-cut portion, too, grew back. Cut on a small branch or twig about 1/4 inch above the bud. To shorten a branch or twig, cut it back to a side branch or make the cut about 1/4 inch above the bud.

Please send close ups of foliage, how long have these shrubs been in this location and did you plant them? How can I cut back a yew bush and similiar type taller yew bush? Yes they can be cut/trimmed, and they may look a little"sick" at first, but will snap back. I,ve cut mine many time,s to keep them from hanging over sidewalks etc.
Reply:No they will fill back out. Don't trim them back to bare wood. gert.
